Hernan Zin

War correspondent, research writer and documentary director

(Buenos Aires, 1971) Hernán Zin has been working in the poorest and most violent areas of the planet for more than 20 years. He has filmed documentaries and written books and stories from more than 40 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. He has collaborated with media such as El País, Rolling Stone, Internatzionale, El Mundo, La Voz de Galicia, The Nation, The Chronicle, Interviú, Cadena Ser, RNE, Cope, Canal Plus, TVE, etc.

Some of his books include ‘Raining on Gaza’ (Ediciones B), ‘A volunteer in Calcutta’ (Temas de hoy), ‘Freedom of commitment’ (Plaza y Janés) and ‘Ice cream and chips’ (Plaza y Janés). The latter, together with the material filmed by Zin, spearheaded a project that has led to the arrest of European pedophiles in Cambodia.

In 1997 he filmed with musician Nacho Cano his first documentary ‘Calcutta, life in the season of death’ for TVE. Since then, his production company Contramedia Films (Madrid) has directed and produced dozens of documentaries and television programs.

His last documentary films: ‘Villas Miseria’ (2009), ‘The War Against Women’ (2013) and ‘Want to be Messi’ (2013). The latter, released by TV channels such as National Geographic, RTF and TVE, has been broadcast in over 50 countries and has won numerous awards at festivals. In December 2014 he premiered his new movie, ‘Born in Gaza’, filmed during the last war in Gaza.

Furthermore, he usually works as a producer and camera man with Jon Sistiaga in his series of reports for Canal Plus. They have filmed together in Afghanistan, Somalia, USA, Argentina, India, Tanzania, and Kenya and Honduras.

Among other awards, in 2010 he received the International Prize of the Academy of Television of Spain. His blog, ‘Journey to the war’, was twice a finalist for the Bobs awards, presented by German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle.
